SAN ANGELO- Kyle Nichols' two 2-run doubles and Corey Frerichs quality start through six innings gave the San Angelo Colts a 3-2 victory against the Alexandria Aces Saturday night at Foster Field.
Nichols tied the game 1-1 off Mike Loseke (1-1) in the first inning with a double to left center that drove in second baseman Jon Dziomba. Then in the sixth, Nichols' opposite field double plated Steve Rinaudo to the the game 2-2, and after Braden Embry grounded to first to move Nichols to third, the Colts' designated hitter scored on Chris Caves long fly ball to left for the winning run.
Frerichs did allow runs to Alexandria in the first inning when Zack Cadet led off the game with a long triple to centerfield and scored on Nick Mahin's double to left. The Aces took a 2-1 lead in the third when Eddie Murray singled to center, stole second base, and came in when first baseman Rinaudo couldn't handle Mahin's hard ground ball to the right side.
Frerichs (2-1) pitched six innings, allowing six hits, walking one, and striking out seven. Loseke matched Frerichs strikeout and walk totals, but allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings.
Alfredo Caballero pitched a perfect ninth to earn his fifth save for the Colts (11-11). Cameron Dullnig struck out the side in his one inning of relief work for the Aces (11-11).
The two teams have split the first two games of the four game series. Alexandria will start Clay Vanderlaan (0-2) against Alex Bates (1-2) tomorrow at 6:05 p.m.
