Alexandria Aces News Release

SAN ANGELO- Dan Schmidt won his second game in as many starts and the Alexandria Aces benefited from receiving 10 walks from San Angelo pitching to beat the Colts, 9-4.

Schmidt (2-0), a lefthander from Perth, Australia, settled down after allowing extra base hits to two of the first three San Angelo hitters to cruise through the second through fifth innings, enabling the Aces to take a 5-2 lead they never relinquished.

"He kept his composure," Alexandria manager Hayes said. "A solid outing from Schmidt."

Schmidt pitched 5 2/3 innings in his second start of the season, scattering nine hits and striking out four batters and walking only one. He would allow four runs, two in the first after allowing extra base hits to Jordan Marks and Steve Rinaudo, and two in the sixth when he began to tire and allowed four singles to Colts hitters.

"He's got a plus change up but it's a set up for his cut fastball," Hayes said. "In this park you'll have to pitch inside with the wind to left. He found that out after allowing a couple of hits in the first inning."

"He reminds me of Shane Rawley," Hayes continued, referencing an old teammate with the Philadelphia Phillies. "Shane couldn't break a pane of glass but he could break bats."

But while Schmidt had good control, San Angelo's pitchers did not. They walked 10 batters, including four in the first off Kristian Bueno (0-1) when the Aces scored two runs.

"He hadn't pitched in two weeks. We knew he wouldn't be sharp," said Colts manager Doc Edwards. Bueno's inactivity was the result of blisters on his left pitching hand. "But he did well enough for me and gave me five innings, which is what I wanted."

Bueno would walk seven batters and allow five hits and three earned runs while striking out one batter.

Second baseman Eddie Murray led a late offensive charge of four in the final two innings for Alexandria by scoring a run in a 2-run eighth and doubling in a run and scoring in a 2-run ninth. He would finish with a 2 for 5 line with three runs scored and 2 RBIs, and even the error he reached on by Colts shortstop Danny Hernandez with two outs in the second inning brought home a run when Doug Freeman scored to give the Aces a 3-2 lead.

"Murray is a player," said Hayes. "He's getting better by the day and getting positioning defensively."

The Aces play the Colts at San Angelo Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Mike Loseke (1-0) pitches for Alexandria against Corey Frerichs (1-1). The game can be heard at www.myacesbaseball.com
