Albany Firebirds News Release
Albany, N.Y. April 21, 2004 â The Albany Conquest will meet the Louisville Fire for the first time in the teams' history on Saturday evening (April 24) at 7 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena, a game which will be televised live on News Channel 13 WNYT-TV and feature a concert by the Rembrandts at halftime and following the game. The Rembrandts are widely known for singing the theme song to the hit NBC television series "Friends."
The Albany Conquest (0-2) will look to gain some momentum after a slow start to the 2004 season losing to Cape Fear Wildcats, 70-55 on April 10, and Manchester Wolves, 47-34 on April 16, both Northeast Division opponents. The Conquest currently sits in last place in the Northeast Division. The Conquest, who will meet Midwest Division opponent Louisville Fire (2-0), have a 12-2 regular season record all-time against non-Northeast Division opponents.
"We have had to make some adjustments heading into our third game of the season, but this is a confident team," said Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews. "An arenafootball2 season is a marathon not a sprint, and we have 14 games remaining on our schedule," Coach Matthews added.
This is the first meeting between the Albany Conquest and the Louisville Fire. The Conquest is 10-2 all-time when meeting a team for the first time. This is the Louisville Fire's fourth af2 season and they have a 15-35 record all-time, but have started the 2004 season undefeated at 2-0, with wins at home against Macon, 78-42 on April 10, and Hawaii, 37-35 on April 16.
The Conquest will look to get a spark from their group of talented receivers, which are led by Tony Locke (OS) who is quickly emerging as a top-flight receiver catching three TD passes and hauling in seven catches for 135 yards this season. Jamie Ware (WR/DB) has also been impressive catching ten passes for 192 yards and three TD's. Quarterbacks Gus Ornstein and D Bryant have both taken snaps this season. Ornstein is 34-of-58 passing with nine touchdowns and four interceptions, while Bryant is 7-of-12 passing with three touchdowns and one interception. The Conquest offense will have to be sharp versus a Louisville Fire secondary, which is led by Justin Thomas (DS). Thomas ranks first in af2 in passes broken up (13) and second in af2 in tackles (17). He also has two interceptions.
