July 3, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jonathan Albaladejo fired a complete game six-hitter to lead the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 4-1 victory over the Road Warriors on Tuesday evening, completing a doubleheader sweep.
Earlier, K.C. Hobson singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Lancaster secured the opener, 4-3, in the second extra frame.
Albaladejo (6-3) walked none and struck out four in his effort. He was two outs away from his second shutout of the season when Gustavo Pierre launched a homer to left field for the Road Warriors' only tally. The right-hander walked none and struck out four in the route going effort.
Lancaster had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Darian Sandford bunted for a single and raced to third on a Tyler Bortnick base hit up the middle. Bortnick broke for second on what turned out to be ball four to Blake Gailen. Catcher Ermindo Escobar opted to make a pickoff attempt on Sandford at third, but threw the ball into left field, allowing the first run to score and Bortnick to reach third. Hobson's slow bounder to third scored Bortnick with a second run, and Trayvon Robinson stretched the lead to 3-0 with a base hit chopped up the middle.
Gailen homered to lead off the Lancaster third against Raul Rivera-Alicea (2-7). Rivera-Alicea also went the distance on a six-hitter.
In the opener, Hobson, who had lined to first with a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh got another opportunity in the ninth. Lefty Christian-Flecha Astacio (2-3) walked Rico Noel with one out. The Lancaster second baseman stole second. Gailen picked up the second walk of the inning. Noel stole third, leaving the Barnstormers with runners at the corners and one out. The Road Warriors decided to walk Ryan Casteel intentionally to load the bases to get to the matchup with Hobson. Hobson rolled a single into right to send the Barnstormers to the win.
The Road Warriors had tied the game in the seventh on a leadoff homer by Chris Rivera off Matt Reynolds.
Earlier, Lancaster had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth on doubles by Noel and Casteel. The Road Warriors recovered with two off Joe Gardner in the top of the fifth inning. Pierre led off with a single through the left side, and Isaac Wenrich drew a four-pitch walk. Rivera dropped a bunt down. Gardner's throw to first eluded the covering Noel, allowing a run to score. One out later, Alberto Silverio singled to center to drive the second run home.
Noel singled home Bortnick and Sandford in the bottom of the fifth to give Lancaster the 3-2 edge.
Gardner worked six innings, allowing four hits and the two runs. Kevin Munson (4-2) pitched the top of the ninth for the win.
The Barnstormers entertain the Road Warriors again on Wednesday. Lancaster will throw Nate Reed (6-1) against newly acquired lefty Andres Caceres (1-0). Fireworks will follow the 6:30 contest. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
