Aigles Win in Pitchers' Duel with Ottawa
July 20, 2018 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - An impressive start for RHP Austin Chrismon wasn't enough for the Ottawa Champions. They lost a pitchers' duel 5-1 to the Trois-Rivieres Aigles in game two of the series at RCGT Park.
The lengthy game featured Chrismon and RHP Chris Murphy engaging in a chess match that ultimately ended in favour of the Aigles, pulling them ahead of the Champions by 5.5 games in the Can-Am League standings.
Chrismon only allowed one hit in his first five innings. He ended up with four hits charged to him in his 6.1 innings of work, and four Trois-Rivieres runs. Murphy won the battle by pitching for eight innings, with just one earned run and five strikeouts.
"He deserved a better fate than what the numbers showed," Champions manager Hal Lanier said of Chrismon's performance. "He really had great stuff today. Murphy did too, you really have to tip your cap to their pitcher. But Austin should have only given up two runs - we gave away some runs that should have been outs."
Lanier said Champions didn't have many opportunities to get to Murphy and the Aigles relievers, and when they did, they grounded into double plays. The stats back up his assertion - Ottawa grounded into two double plays in the contest.
Offensively, the Champions got another good performance from INF Vinny Guglietti, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. He now hits .298 on the season, and is 6-for-16 since returning from injury on July 11.
Ottawa and Trois-Rivieres resume their series Saturday evening, in the third game of the series. Tickets for all the weekend affairs are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
