Miners Hold off Jackals

Little Falls, NJ - The Sussex County Miners (39-19) scored three runs in both of the fourth and fifth innings and held off a late rally to defeat the New Jersey Jackals (29-28) by a score of 7-4 on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Miners struck first in the 4th when a pair of doubles gave the Miners the fourth inning lead. Luis Alen drove in Mikey Reynolds and Jayce Ray to make the score 2-0, and Jarred Mederos drove Alen in with a double of his own one batter later to make the score 3-0 Miners.

Sussex County would increase their lead to six runs in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice RBI by Audy Ciriaco that scored Martin Figueroa, and run scoring singles by Ray and Alen scoring Daniel Mateo and Ciriaco, respectively, to expand the Miners lead to 6-0 through five innings.

The Jackals would plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by Jordan Hinshaw before the Miners added an eighth inning run when Ray scored on a fielding error. New Jersey would plate two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Kevin Torres, but El'Hajj Muhammad would strike out pinch hitter Andy Mocahbee to finish the inning at 7-4 Miners. Alex Demchak would then work a perfect ninth to nail down his sixth save and preserve the victory for Sussex County.

Luis Alen paced the Miners offensive attack with 2 hits, including a double, and 3 RBIs. Daniel Mateo, Mikey Reynolds, and Jarred Mederos all collected two hits as well for Sussex County.

Kenny Koplove (5-3), making his second career start, worked five innings and allowed only two hits in picking up the win for the Miners. Alberto Rodriguez (3-5) took the loss for New Jersey, working five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.

The Miners and Jackals will now take the series to Skylands Stadium on Superhero Night tomorrow night at 6:05 pm.
