Mississippi Braves News Release
Pensacola, FL - Kevin Ahrens launched his first home run of the year to give the Mississippi Braves an early lead, but that's all the offense they would muster in a 4-3 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Monday night at Bayfront Stadium.
It was the third one-run game in as many contests in the series. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the M-Braves (20-17).
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Mallex Smith singled on the infield, extending his hit streak to 14 games, tied for 10th all-time on the Braves' franchise list. Corban Joseph singled, and Kevin Ahrens blasted a Robert Stephenson fastball over the left field fence for a 3-1 lead.
The Wahoos (16-22) came surging back, scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning against reliever Mark Lamm, who committed two errors in the frame for two runs, one earned, tying the game 3-3. With Ryan Wright standing at second, Kyle Skipworth clubbed an infield hit to first. Lamm short-armed the throw and Wright came around third to score on the error.
Lamm threw a pickoff to first that got away, sending Skipworth to second, setting up a Seth Mejias-Brean RBI single to tie the game.
In the sixth, Juan Silva drove home the go-ahead run with a two-out double just fair inside the third base bag, plating Mejias-Brean from second for a 4-3 lead.
Jorge Reyes (4-2) suffered the loss in relief, allowing a run on three hits. Starter Jake Brigham left the game in the first after taking a comebacker off the leg from Marquez Smith, an infield hit that scored the first Blue Wahoos run.
Robert Stephenson (2-4) nabbed the win, allowing three runs on six hits over six frames, striking out six and walking two. Kyle McMyne (S, 2) picked up the save, allowing two hits in a scoreless ninth.
The Braves try to get back to winning baseball and take the series in Tuesday's fourth of five games in Pensacola, with right-hander Greg Ross (2-2, 4.83) slated to toe the rubber against Pensacola right-hander Daniel Wright (1-4, 6.21).
