Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After a heartbreaking 4-3 loss the day before, the Barons made sure that didn't happen again Monday night. Birmingham posted 10 runs on 18 hits in Mobile, Ala., and held the BayBears to just three hits in a shutout win. Five Barons hitters recorded a three-hit game, and spot-starter Tyler Barnette picked up his first win in a two-hit, 5.1 inning performance.
The Barons led 7-0 after just five innings with two runs in the first and five in the fourth. Tim Anderson began the slugfest with a double in the first and reached third on an E9. Courtney Hawkins drew first blood with an RBI double, and a bases-loaded walk to Adrian Nieto plated the second run.
The five-run fourth began with another RBI hit on a sharp liner to left. Leadoff hitter Jacob May scored from third after swiping two bases. Danny Hayes scored the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout, and a Brian Fletcher triple scored the third and fourth. Nieto topped off the big inning with single to center to drive in Fletcher.
Fletcher struck again in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Christian Marrero, and Nieto blasted his first home run on a fly to right to score Birmingham's ninth run. Nieto was responsible for the Barons final run with an RBI single in the eighth.
Nieto was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored, and both Anderson and Marrero each 3-for-4 with two walks and a double each. Hawkins and May also posted three hits. Hayes, Fletcher and Jeremy Farrell rounded out the battery with one hit each. Fletcher batted in three runs, while Hawkins drove in two and Hayes' RBI grounder accounted for the 10th run.
The Barons lead the series 2-1 with game four set to begin at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday night. Right-hander Frankie Montas (0-1, 3.38 ERA) is set to throw for Birmingham and Edgar Garcia (1-0, 2.57 ERA) gets the start for Mobile. With the win, the Barons improve to 18-20 while the BayBears fall to 20-18.
The Barons wrap up the series with Mobile Wednesday and travel directly to Huntsville, Ala., Thursday to take on the Biloxi Shuckers for a five-game series. The Barons return to Birmingham May 27 for the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field. They host the Jacksonville Suns for five, with the final four contests played at Regions Field.
