Berrios and Blash Named Pitcher and Player of the Week
May 18, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 11 through May 17. Righthander Jose Berrios of the Chattanooga Lookouts was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Jackson Generals outfielder Jabari Blash earned Player of the Week honors.
Berrios made the most of his one start last week, tossing the first nine-inning, complete game shutout in the league this season. In a 3-0 win at Birmingham, the righthander from Bayamon, Puerto Rico struck out eight batters, allowing just two hits and two walks. His miniscule 0.44 WHIP and .071 batting average against were both lowest in the loop last week. Considered one of the top prospects in baseball, Berrios is 4-1 on the season with a 2.60 ERA and 53 strikeouts. This is his fourth career pitcher of the week award after he earned the same honors in the Midwest League on August 12 of 2013 and was twice named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week last season.
In just six games played, Blash produced a well-rounded week with a .435 batting average, six runs, 10 hits, five extra-base hits, 19 total bases, three doubles, two homeruns, and nine RBI. Splitting time between right and left field, the St. Thomas, Virgin Islands native produced a .500 on-base percentage, an .826 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.326. He tied for the league lead in RBI, while his batting average, extra base hits, total bases, homeruns, slugging and OPS were all top five numbers. Recording three multi-hit games and four games with an extra-base hit, his best performance came in the Generals 14-10 defeat against Biloxi on May 13 when he went 4-for-5 with two homeruns, seven RBI, two runs scored, and 10 total bases. This is Blash's second career Player of the Week honors after he was named Southern League Player of the Week on August 26, 2013.
