
af2 League Office Assigns Two Players to Steamwheelers

DAVENPORT, Iowa â With the start of training camp just eight days away, Quad City Steamwheelers coach Rich Ingold is beginning to finalize his training camp roster for the 2004 season. On Thursday the Steamwheelers were assigned offensive linemen/defensive linemen Jon Verdegan and kicker Ryan Geisler by the arenafootball2 league office.
Verdegan joins the Steamwheelers after playing the past two seasons with the af2's Peoria Pirates. In two years with the Pirates, Verdegan saw action in 21 games accounting for 21 tackles, two sacks, and an interception. In 2002 he was a member of the Pirate team that defeated the Florida Firecats 65-47, to claim Arena Cup 2002.
Verdegan is no stranger to Quad City area. He joined the football staff at St.Ambrose University last fall as a defensive line coach. Verdegan joins the 2004 Steamwheelers training camp roster with one of his former players, Brandon Graves. Graves was assigned to the Steamwheelers on February 3, 2004 after playing on the defensive line at St. Ambrose last fall.
Geisler joins the Steamwheelers after spending the past two seasons with the af2's San Diego Riptide. Geisler took over the Riptide kicking duties in 2002 connecting on seven of 28 field goal attempts and hitting 54 of his 71 point after field goal attempts.
2003 appeared to be Geisler's af2 breakout year. He finished fourth in scoring among kickers in the af2 with 114 points and finished the season as the Riptide's leading scoring. He was tied for first in the league making 15 field goals and ranked in top ten for point after field goals making 69 of his 83 attempts.
Geisler was assigned to the Riptide following a successful college career at California Lutheran University a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Geisler will compete with newly assigned kicker Matt Russell for the Steamwheelers kicking duties this season.
This now brings the Steamwheelers training camp roster to 31 players with four spots remaining open for camp, which opens on March 18. Players report on March 17.
