Aeros sign Kotyk

HOUSTON, Texas - The American Hockey League's Houston Aeros have signed goaltender Seamus Kotyk (SHAY-muhz, KAH-tihk), general manager Tom Lynn announced Monday. The Aeros open up training camp Tuesday from 2-3:15 p.m. at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center following the impacts of Hurricane Rita. A complete schedule of the first week of training camp is listed at the bottom of this press release. Please note that the Aeros are not expected to have all assigned players in town until at least Wednesday afternoon due to the hurricane.

The Aeros also invited the following players to camp Monday on tryouts: defensemen Chris Cava and Darryl McArthur, left wing Derek Campbell and centers Nicolas Corbeil and Olivier Proulx.

The Aeros' training camp roster stands at 28. Goalies (3) - Josh Harding, Miroslav Kopriva, Seamus Kotyk; Defensemen (12) - Chris Cava, Kurtis Foster, Chris Heid, Darryl McArthur, Curtis Murphy, Anders Myrvold, Colin Peters, Erik Reitz, Aaron Schneekloth, Ryan Stokes, Clayton Stoner, Dustin Wood. Forwards (13) - Derek Campbell, Nicolas Corbeil, Adam Courchaine, Mike James, Bill Kinkel, Kirby Law, Bryan Lundbohm, Josh Olson, Olivier Proulx, Mark Rooneem, Joey Tetarenko, Roman Voloshenko, Erik Westrum.

Kotyk, who turns 25 on Opening Night (October 7) went 10-6-1 with a 2.95 gaa in 23 games last season for the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals. He spent the prior three seasons with the Cleveland Barons of the AHL, and his career mark in the league is 36-49-8 with a 2.69 gaa. Last April, he became the eighth goalie in AHL history to score a goal when he accomplished the feat against San Antonio. Kotyk earned the win in the first ever game at Toyota Center, beating the Aeros 5-2 on October 24, 2003. The 5-foot-11, 187-pound native of London, Ont., won the Gretzky Trophy as Ontario Hockey League post-season Most Valuable Player in 2001 as his Ottawa 67's advanced to the Memorial Cup. Ottawa won the Memorial Cup in 1999. In four seasons with the 67's, Kotyk went 75-38-16 a 2.69 gaa. Kotyk was Boston's fifth-round pick (No. 147 overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
