Aerodynamics...

Pitcher's Duel...Akron's Frank Herrmann and Bowie's Jake Arrieta brought out the best in one another last night, using two divergent styles to entertain the fans that ultimately went home happy after Akron's 2-1 triumph. Herrmann got the win for the Aeros, turning in a quality start while holding the Baysox to just one run on five hits over six innings. The native of Rutherford, NJ issued just one walk and recorded only one strikeout, but did an excellent job of keeping the ball down in the strike zone and letting his defenders work behind him (the same strategy he employed en route to winning a team-high 11 games last year). Arrieta, on the other hand, came out with both guns blazing. The TCU product struck out the side in the first to escape a bases-loaded jam, and went on to collect eight punch-outs and allow just one hit. The only problem for Arrieta was that he reached his pitch count after just four innings, and the Baysox bullpen would go on to absorb the loss.

Recurring Theme Alert...In Wednesday's Opening Night win, the Aeros turned nine Bowie walks into five runs in what ended up being a four-run margin of victory. Last night, Akron collected seven free passes from Bowie pitching to reinforce a modest three-hit attack and earn a 2-1 win. The Aeros were trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth when CF Jose Constanza beat out an infield single with two outs to keep the inning alive. SS Carlos Rivero then walked on five pitches to move Constanza into scoring position, and 1B Beau Mills tied the game by willing a roller over the second base bag and into centerfield (it was Akron's only hit with a man in scoring position all night). The Aeros went on to take the lead for good in the sixth, doing so without the benefit of a hit. LF Nick Weglarz and 3B Jared Goedert both walked to start the inning, 2B Niuman Romero put down a perfect sacrifice bunt, and RF John Drennen followed with a sacrifice fly as Weglarz chugged home with what proved to be the winning run.

That's How I Spell Relief...LHP Ryan Edell was excellent in his first outing as a full-time reliever last night, allowing just a walk and single over a pair of scoreless innings to keep Akron's one-run margin intact and earn his first hold of the year. Closer Vinnie Pestano followed with a perfect ninth inning for his first save, striking out a pair and not allowing a ball out of the infield. RHPs Scott Roehl and Neil Wagner are the only relievers yet to see action, but that should change tonight.

Did You Know...On this date in 1982 (27 years ago today), the Indians played their home opener at old Municipal Stadium and lost to the Texas Rangers 8-3. What's memorable about that game however is that the game-time temperature was 38 degrees with a wind chill of 17, and 500 tons of snow had to be removed from the field. Even more amazing: Cleveland still announced a crowd of 62,443. Hmm.
