3BAerodynamics...
7-Up...Lightning struck twice for the Aeros yesterday (thankfully only figuratively), as Akron scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the second straight game in a 7-3 win over Bowie. Like Friday's contest, the Aeros had managed next to nothing against the Bowie starter in the first half of the game. Friday night Bowie's Jason Berken allowed only an infield single through the first four innings, and yesterday right-hander Chris Tillman dominated while no-hitting Akron for the first five innings and departing with a 3-0 lead. The tide turned immediately once Tillman departed however, as Akron C Armando Camacaro greeted reliever Dan Lonsberry with a sinking double to left that Kennard Jones couldn't handle. Lonsberry recovered to get tow of the next three hitters (the exception being the hit by pitch), and with two strikes on 1B Michael Aubrey looked like he might get out of the inning unscathed. Aubrey poked an RBI single to left however, and Lonsberry then served up a 3-1 fastball to 3B Wes Hodges, who sent it to the deepest part of the yard for a two-run triple. A pair of walks loaded the bases, and LF Nathan Panther delivered the big blow with a three-run double that bounced directly over the third base bag to give Akron the lead for good. Camacaro then capped the inning with an RBI single. All seven runs scored with two away in the inning, and four Akron hitters reached base with two outs and two strikes against them.
Easy Edell...Akron starter Ryan Edell cruised through four shutout innings yesterday before allowing his first runs of the season in the top of the fifth. Edell tossed six scoreless frames in his season debut in Binghamton, and retired 13 of the first 15 hitters he faced Saturday. The left-hander also retired 10 straight hitters at one point before tiring in the fifth. RHP J.D. Martin relieved Edell and was also outstanding, earning his second win of the year and allowing just one walk over 3.1 no-hit innings.
Still Streaking...1B Michael Aubrey and LF Nathan Panther both extended their hitting streaks with sixth-inning hits yesterday. Aubrey stretched his streak to nine games to open the year, while Panther has now hit in all six games in which he's played. 3B Wes Hodges is also off to a hot start, hitting .333 to open the year and .318 (7-22) with a pair of two-hit performances over his current five-game hitting streak.
Did You Know...This is the first time the Aeros have won back-to-back games this year. The Aeros haven't won three straight against Bowie since April 17th-19th, 2006 (three-game sweep), and haven't taken three of four from the Baysox in a series since May 27th-30th, 2005 in Bowie (lost the first game on the 27th, won the next three).
