End of the Road...The Aeros concluded their opening road trip last night, falling to Binghamton by a final count of 6-3. Akron held a short-lived 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI groundout by LF Nathan Panther and a run-scoring single by CF Jose Constanza (his first hit of the year), but the Mets countered with three runs in the third and never trailed again. The Aeros finished the trip with a 2-4 mark after going 45-31 (a .592 winning percentage) on the road in 2007.
Awesome Aubrey...1B Michael Aubrey continued his hot start last night, cracking a solo home run in the eighth for his second blast of the young season. Aubrey also extended his hitting streak to six games, although with just seven hits in those six contests his batting average is a somewhat pedestrian .280. LF Nathan Panther, filling in for the injured Trevor Crowe (more on him in a moment), went 1-4 and drove in a run to extend his hitting streak to a modest four games.
King Without a Crowe...Akron's Opening Day leftfielder and leadoff man Trevor Crowe was officially placed on the disabled list today with tightness in his lower back. Crowe had missed the last four games, so the move was retroactive to April 6th. Replacing him on the active roster is OF Stephen Head, who was expected to be with the Aeros from the get-go but was still in extended spring training recovering from off-season surgery on his right (non-throwing) labrum. A converted first baseman, Head spent the bulk of last year in Kinston, where he hit .251 with 29 doubles, 13 homers and 61 RBI in 102 games before joining the Aeros for the stretch run in early August. He batted .276 with three homers and 18 RBI in 26 games for Akron, while also getting his first extended taste of right field (18 of his 26 starts came in right, as opposed to just 17 in 102 games with Kinston). Head joined the Indians system as a 2nd-round draft pick in 2005 out of the University of Mississippi, where he left school as the only three-time All-American in Ole Miss history. He also set a school record with 26 saves in his career, and played for the USA National Team in 2003.
A Different World...After battering the Harrisburg pitching staff 23 runs in three games to open the year, the Aeros offense ran into a buzz saw in the Binghamton hurlers. Akron suffered its first shutout of the year Monday, and managed just three runs in both of the final two contests. The Aeros currently rank eighth in the league with a .226 team batting average after their .277 team mark tied New Britain for tops on the circuit last year.
Did You Know...Last night's two-run rally in the top of the second marked the first time all year the Aeros scored first in a game, but the club has yet to score in the first inning this season.
