TONIGHT'S CONTEST...Akron kicks-off an eight-game homestand tonight, starting with four against the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets)...LHP DERRICK VAN DUSEN toes the rubber for Akron...In his last two starts, Van Dusen is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA (12.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 9 SO)...His last start came back on May 14 @ Bowie, earning the win in the Aeros 13-3 victory...RHP JASON SCOBIE goes for Binghamton...He was superb in his last start (May 14 vs. NB)...He earned his second win of the year (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO).
RECENTLY...The Aeros return home this evening after a seven-game road trip through Bowie and New Haven that saw them go 4-3...Akron left for the trip tied for first place and continue to hold that place in the E.L.'s Southern Division...Yesterday, the Aeros lost 6-2 to the New Haven Ravens...RHP JEREMY GUTHRIE (5-2) suffered just his second loss of the season, going 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, 4 runs (earned), walking none and striking out two...RF TYLER MINGES was 3-for-4 with an RBI and DH RON WRIGHT was 2-for-4 with 1 R, 1 2B & 1 RBI.
FIRST THINGS FIRST...The Aeros are currently tied with the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) for first place in the Eastern League's Southern Division.
WHO'S HOT...RHP RAFAEL BETANCOURT has allowed just one earned run in his last nine appearances (15.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 25 SO)...He has struck out a remarkable 38 batters in 25.9 innings pitched...Since joining the Aeros on May 2, RHP JACK CRESSEND has not allowed an earned run (5 G, 9.1 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO)...Since joining the Aeros bullpen on May 12, RHP KAZUHITO TADANO has not allowed an earned run (3 G, 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO)...Over his last eight games, RF RYAN CHURCH is batting ..429 (12-28) with 6 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR & 7 RBI...After going 0-for-34, OF TYLER MINGES is now 4-for-his-last-7 with 2 R & 1 RBI...Over his last six games, CF GRADY SIZEMORE is batting .320 (8-25) with 5 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI & 1 SB.
LEADER BOARD...RHP JEREMY GUTHRIE leads the Eastern League in innings pitched (57.2), he is tied for first in shutouts (2) and complete games (2), is second in ERA (1.56) and is tied for second in wins (5)...RHP FERNANDO CABRERA leads the E.L. in strikeouts (48) and is eighth in ERA (2.36)...RHP KYLE DENNEY is fourth in strikeouts (41) and 10th in ERA (2.51).
AS A TEAM...The Aeros pitching staff leads the Eastern League in strikeouts (323) and has allowed the fewest home runs (12)...The staff is second in ERA (3.35)...As a team, the Aeros are last in batting average (.246).
TRANSACTION...Last Wednesday, the Aeros sent LHP MARCOS MENDOZA to Class A Kinston and received RHP BLAKE STEIN from Extended Spring Training...Stein comes to the Aeros with 117 games of Major League experience over five seasons with Oakland and Kansas City...He owns a career Major League record of 21-28 with 2 saves & a 5.41 ERA (117 G, 66 GS, 2 CG, 1 SHO, 475.2 IP, 451 H, 301 R, 286 ER, 281 BB, 369 SO)...Stein was with the Devil Rays during Spring Training, 2003 and signed as a free agent with the Indians on April 18...In nine games with the Aeros, Mendoza was 1-0 with a 10.67 ERA (14.1 IP, 16 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 13 BB, 14 SO).
