(WEST HAVEN, CT) -- New Haven rode the strong pitching of Diego Markwell and the hot bat of Simon Pond to a 4-2 victory Monday over the Altoona Curve.
Markwell (2-2) tossed 7 1/3 solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in collecting the win. The left-hander, who is normally a starter, came on in relief of major league right-hander Pete Walker. Walker, who is on a rehabilitation assignment with the Ravens, started and pitched a perfect inning.
Offensively, Pond went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and a double to rally the Ravens. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Pond lined his sixth round-tripper of the season over the right field fence to give New Haven (21-18) the lead for good.
Curve starter Ben Shaffar (1-3) surrendered the decisive longball. The right-hander worked five innings on a yield of three runs and three hits in taking the defeat. Shaffar walked four and struck out four.
Altoona (20-21) took a 1-0 advantage in the third when Josh Bonifay smacked a lead-off home run to right center. The blast was Bonifay's seventh of the season--tying him with Shawn Garrett for the team-high.
The Ravens tacked on an insurance run in the sixth against reliever Rick Palma. Pond started the rally with an infield single, moved to second on a walk to Shawn Fagan, and scored on a hit by John Ford-Griffin.
The Curve scored a run and put the tying run on base in the ninth. With one out, Shaun Skrehot doubled and went to third when Chris Duffy reached on an error by Markwell.
Ray Navarrete, who extended his hitting streak to ten games with a seventh-inning single, knocked in Skrehot with his second hit of the game to make it, 4-2.
Ravens' closer Kevin Frederick was called on to get the final two outs. Jose Castillo popped out to short right on Frederick's first pitch. After a wild pitch moved the Curve runners to second and third, Frederick struck out Chan Perry on a full-count pitch to end the game.
The save was the third of the season for Frederick.
Game two of the series at Yale Field is Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Curve lefty Sean Burnett (3-2, 2.23) will square off with Ravens' right-hander Cameron Reimers (2-1, 2.80).
