TONIGHT'S CONTEST...Akron takes on Bowie (Baltimore Orioles) in the rubber match of their three game series tonight at 7:05 p.m...LHP DERRICK VAN DUSEN goes for Akron, RHP JACOBO SEQUEA for Bowie.

RECENTLY...RHP JEREMY GUTHRIE continued his dominance of Eastern League batters with a his second complete-game shutout of the season last night, beating Bowie 4-0...Guthrie allowed just four hits, one walk and struck out two en route to his fifth win...Over his last 32.1 IP, he has allowed 18 H, 2 R/ER, 4 BB & 19 SO...CF GRADY SIZEMORE was 2-for-5 with 2 R, 1 HR & 2 RBI in the Aeros win.

FIRST THINGS FIRST...With their win last night, Akron is now in first place and hold a 1.0 game lead over second-place Erie.

TRANSACTION...Today, the Aeros sent LHP MARCOS MENDOZA to Class A Kinston and received RHP BLAKE STEIN from Extended Spring Training...Stein comes to the Aeros with 117 games of Major League experience over five seasons with Oakland and Kansas City...He owns a career Major League record of 21-28 with 2 saves & a 5.41 ERA (117 G, 66 GS, 2 CG, 1 SHO, 475.2 IP, 451 H, 301 R, 286 ER, 281 BB, 369 SO)...Stein was with the Devil Rays during Spring Training, 2003 and signed as a free agent with the Indians on April 18...In nine games with the Aeros, Mendoza was 1-0 with a 10.67 ERA (14.1 IP, 16 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 13 BB, 14 SO).

PLAYER OF THE MONTH... The Chase Bank has named Akron Aeros right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie as the Eastern League's Chase Most Valuable Player for the month of April. Guthrie had an outstanding month for the Aeros, compiling a record of 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA, 17 strikeouts and only 6 walks in his five starts. In his professional debut against the Erie SeaWolves on April 3, the 24-year old allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out three batters in six shutout innings to earn the first win of his career. In his final start of the month the 6'1", 200 lb. hurler struck out six Altoona batters while tossing a complete game three-hit shutout to pick up his third win of the month. Guthrie was a near unanimous selection for the award, receiving more than twice as many votes as any other nominee. Guthrie will receive his award later this month in an on-field presentation at Canal Park in Akron and he will also be recognized at the Chase MVP Awards banquet when the season ending winners are announced.

LEADER BOARD...RHP JEREMY GUTHRIE leads the Eastern League in ERA (1.05) and innings pitched (51.2), and is tied for the league lead in wins (5), complete games (2) and shutouts (2)...RHP FERNANDO CABRERA leads the E.L. in strikeouts (41)...RHP RAFAEL BETANCOURT and RHP KYLE DENNEY are tied for third in punchouts (34)...INF LUIS GONZALEZ is tied for the league lead in doubles (12)...2B MAICER IZTURIS is tied for the E.L. lead in triples (5)...CF GRADY SIZEMORE is tied for fourth in runs scored (26) and RBI (28).

ERRORS...The Aeros have been plagued by errors through their first 38 games...As a team, Akron has committed 62 errors, which leads the Eastern League.
