Milwaukee, WI- Number fours were everywhere in the Bradley Center Thursday night, as the Admirals defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-2 on the same night Packer legend Brett Favre officially announced his retirement.
Rich Peverley continued his hot streak as he tallied his 12th and 13th AHL goals of the season and now has 14 points since returning from Nashville just eight games ago.
In a game riddled with penalties, Peverley open the scoring just 2:03 into the first period. The play began when Milwaukee defenseman Nolan Yonkman broke up a Griffin breakout plan that allowed Peverley to go in on Grand Rapids netminder Adam Berkhoel with a one-on-one. Peverley streaked down the side-boards before taking a wrist shot that beat Berkhoel's under his left pad.
Milwaukee's penalty kill sprang into action over the next few minutes as they killed off all five Griffin power-plays, including a one minute five-on-three advantage. Milwaukee's penalty kill stayed strong all night allowing just one goal in nine short-handed opportunities.
Milwaukee would strike again with 2:26 remaining in the first frame on a highlight-reel goal by Matt Ellison. Ellison was the final recipient of a three on two attack by the Admirals and scored by sneaking the puck through Berkhoel's five-hole.
Peverley would get his second tally of the night at the 15:16 mark of the second period, as he scooped up a loose puck in a scramble in front of the Grand Rapids' goal. While Berkhoel was caught out of position, Peverley roofed a shot and gave the Admirals the eventual game winning goal.
Grand Rapids tried to make a game of it as Darren Helm scored him ninth goal of the year with 2:17 remaining in the second stanza. Helm scored on a shot from the right hashmark that deflected off of an Admiral stick and past Milwaukee goalie Pekka Rinne.
Milwaukee winger Kelsey Wilson would add an insurance goal and give the Admirals the magic number four on the night. Wilson fired a shot through a group of players surrounding the Griffin net that beak Berkhoel's outstretched stick.
Grand Rapids would beat Rinne one more time on a Kyle Quincey slap shot from the high point that zipped between Rinne's legs.
Peverley paced the Admirals offense with his two markers, while center Jason Guerriero picked up two assists. Rinne stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced to earn his league leading 29th win of the season.
With the victory, Milwaukee moved two points up on Houston for fifth place and a potential playoff spot in the West Division. The Admirals are just one point back of Peoria for fourth.
Milwaukee continues their six-game homestand Saturday night against the Rockford IceHogs with the puck dropping at 7:30 PM. Poison front-man and star of VH1's Rock of Love Bret Michaels will perform live in concert following the game. The concert is free with a game ticket.
