Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Des Moines, IA--Former Admirals goalie Jeremy Smith stopped 41 shots to lead the Iowa Wild to a 3-2 win in overtime over the Admirals Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Smith, playing his first game against his former team, earned his first win of the season.
Iowa's Mike Reilly scored the game-winner at 3:51 of overtime with a one-timer from the top of the right circle. The Admirals were down two skaters with both Conor Allen and Anthony Bitetto in the penalty box. The penalty to Allen had just ended when the puck crossed the goal line.
The Admirals forced the overtime when rookie forward Max Gortz sent a slapshot from the top of the left circle into the goal with just 1:16 to play in regulation time. Gortz blasted a one-timer into the net off a feed from the right point by defenseman Jimmy Oligny. Frederick Gaudreau recorded the other assist. The goal was the first in North America for Gortz.
Milwaukee scored the first goal of the game at 1:29 of the first period. Viktor Arvidsson fired a slap-pass from the right point to a streaking Colton Sissons. Sissons was able to get his stick on the puck and redirect it into the net for his second goal of the season. Arvidsson and Taylor Aronson recorded the assists. The goal marked just the second time Milwaukee scored first through seven contests this season.
Iowa tied the game at 5:38 of the second period. Wild defenseman Gustav Olofsson was able to keep the zone after a Milwaukee clearing attempt. He passed from the right point into the right circle for a wide-open Matt Carey. Carey's shot was stopped but Brett Sutter pushed the rebound into the net for his first goal of the season.
The Wild claimed the lead at 11:34 of the second period when defenseman Joe Finley's shot from the left point found its way through traffic into the net. The goal was Finley's first since Oct. 23, 2012.
The Admirals next game is at Iowa, once again, on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 10:30 am. Milwaukee returns home to host the Lake Erie Monsters Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:05 pm.
