Adams resigns as Mystics head coach

Washington, D.C. â President of Washington Sports & Entertainment Susan O'Malley today announced that Michael Adams has resigned as Head Coach of the Washington Mystics. Adams has accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of Maryland under Head Coach Gary Williams.
"The Washington Mystics would like to thank Michael Adams for his contributions over the past season and for leading our team to the playoffs," said O'Malley. "He will always be a member of our family, and we wish him all the best in his new position at the University of Maryland."
Adams was named head coach of the Mystics on February 17, 2004. As a rookie head coach, he led Washington back to the playoffs for the first since the 2002 season, compiling a 17-17 record. He joined the Mystics organization following a career in basketball that spanned over 20 years. He spent 11 seasons in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings, Washington Bullets, and the Denver Nuggets before finishing his career with the Charlotte Hornets following the 1995-96 season. In his two stints with Washington as a player, Adams was a fan favorite, and was named to the NBA All-Star team in 1992.
"I want to thank the Mystics and the entire Washington Sports and Entertainment organization for a great season," said Adams. "From Mr. Pollin, to Susan O'Malley, Pat Summitt, Judy Holland-Burton, the players, coaches and staff all made last season memorable, and I know there are great things ahead for the Mystics. This opportunity with Maryland came about very quickly and wasn't something I planned on, and while I'm looking forward to joining Gary Williaims and the Maryland staff, I will always be rooting for the Mystics and Wizards."
In his new position, Adams will be reunited with Williams, his former collegiate coach at Boston College from 1982-85
The Mystics will begin the search for a head coach immediately. O'Malley, Mystics Player Personnel Consultant Pat Summitt and General Manager Linda Hargrove will oversee the process.
