Aces settle for 6-2 road trip as Gulls rally for 5-3 win

SAN DIEGO - Alaska center Vladimir Novak scored twice but the Aces surrendered two shorthanded goals in a span of 29 seconds midway through the second period to lose their grip on the lead, and the game, in an eventual 5-3 loss to the San Diego Gulls in front of 5,862 at the ipayone center.
Novak opened the scoring just 1:58 into the game by roofing a snap shot over San Diego starter Tyler Weiman, who would face 48 shots on goal, a season-high for Alaska, who had been 22-2 when scoring the game's first goal and 19-0 when leading after the first period. Peter Metcalf hit Ryan Ramsay with a long pass to set up a breakaway, and Ramsay tucked a backhander five-hole on Weiman for a 2-0 edge at the 8:36 mark. The Gulls pulled within 2-1 in the final minute of the period when defenseman Evan Shaw scored his second goal of the season with a backhander that sailed over Chris Beckford-Tseu's right shoulder.
The Aces sought to extend their one-goal lead when Martin Mandeville was called for roughing at 10:49 of the second period, but instead fell behind 3-2 when Richard Keyes spun and beat Beckford-Tseu top shelf with a wrist shot from the left circle at 11:31, and Kelly Askew followed by converting a breakaway at the 12-minute mark. Novak's second of the night briefly tied the game at 3-3 with 6:27 left in the frame, but Jon Shockey put San Diego ahead for good with his third goal of the year (two against Alaska) from between the circles at 16:24.
The Aces never got the equalizer, and an empty-netter by Jesse Bennefield with 16 seconds left in the third period sealed the first loss in net for Beckford-Tseu, who had been 12-0-2 entering the game. The Gulls were outshot 48-25 but salvaged a 2-4 record in the season series.
Alaska hits the midway point of its 2005-06 schedule at 27-6-3 overall, four points behind West Division leader Las Vegas. The Aces welcome the Stockton Thunder for a three-game series at Sullivan Arena Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. All Alaska Aces games, home and away, are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com.
