Aces rally to knock off WhiteWings

Harlingen, TX - The Alexandria Aces (17-16) scored three runs in the ninth to beat the Harlingen WhiteWings (13-21) 7-6 tonight at Harlingen Field.

With the WhiteWings up 6-4 in the top of the ninth, Brian Daly (0-4) came in for the save. Bryan Sabatella got things going with an infield single and Luis Guance hit a single too. Selwyn Langaigne and Patrick O'Sullivan followed with RBI-singles to tie the game. Palmer Karr Jr. then hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly to make it 7-6.

Juan Carlos Ovalles pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.

The Aces manufactured a run in the first against Kenny Evoniuk when Sabatella snuck a single past Terry Roblez, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a ground out by Luis Guance.

Brian Nichols hit a two-out triple against Jeremy Cameron and scored when Ryan Fox reached on an error to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

David Fowler led off the second with a double. Terry Roblez put down a sacrifice bunt and though the throw was in time, it hit off of Patrick O'Sullivan's glove, allowing Fowler to score to make it 2-1 WhiteWings.

The Aces took the lead back in the fourth when O'Sullivan and Karr led off with single and Blake Butler walked. One out later, Eddie Fitzpatrick drew a 10-pitch walk to force in a run. One out after that, Tyler Farrar hit an RBI-single to make it 3-2 Aces.

The WhiteWings sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth to score four runs and take a 6-3 lead. Fowler and Roblez started with back-to-back doubles on the first two pitches of the inning. One out later, Candelario Perez reached on an error to move Roblez to third. Bub Bergstrom hit a sacrifice fly, Kevin Griffin hit an RBI and then Nichols hit an RBI-triple to cap the inning.

The Aces got a run in the seventh against Juan Jimenez. Madison Edwards led off with a double. With two outs, Langaigne struck out swinging, but reached on a wild pitch, moving Edwards to third. O'Sullivan followed with a grounder to third that Fox bobbled to allow Edwards to score, making it 6-4.

Jimenez went four innings, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits while striking out eight.

The WhiteWings and Aces play game two of this three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Alex Gett (1-5) will face left-hander Chad Linder (2-1).
