San Angelo Colts News Release

LAREDO, Texas - The second-place San Angelo Colts (19-15) secured their spot in the ULB standings a little more tightly with a 7-2 win over the third-place Laredo Broncos (17-16) in the series opener of a three-game set Tuesday night at Veterans Field.

The Colts led 2-1 from the third inning until the ninth, when San Angelo broke the game open with a five-run frame off relievers John Smith (three runs) and Rusty Jones (two runs). The first eight batters of the inning all reached and the first five came home to score. Wyn Diggs walked with the bases loaded to bring home the first run of the frame, then Charley Belew, Tyrone Pendergrass, John Anderson, and Bryan Frichter all hit run-scoring, bases-loaded singles.

The Broncos got a run back in the bottom of the ninth, but with the bases loaded and one out, Colts closer Miliade Venas entered the game and struck out the only two batters he faced to close it, earning his first save as a Colt, since the tying run was on deck when he came in.

Laredo took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Dwayne White off Colts starter Logan Williamson (4-2), who allowed just that run in 6 1/3 innings. The lefty became the first Colts pitcher this season to four wins, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking three.

The Colts got even in the second on a leadoff solo home run by Aaron Cone, his third of the year. San Angelo then took a 2-1 edge in the third on a one-out homer by Frichter, his fourth of the year and second in as many nights. Laredo starter Santo Hernandez (4-2) retired 11 in a row after that but took the loss, throwing eight innings, giving up two runs on just five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Both of his losses this season have come against the Colts.

The Colts turned two double plays on the night and the Broncos stranded 11 runners. Laredo also had one important runner thrown out at second base in the eighth. With one out and Luany Sanchez at first, Santiago Guerrero singled to left, prompting Sanchez to try to take third on the play. Jose Torres' throw went to third and was not in time, but the third baseman Cone then threw to second to nail Guerrero for the second out. Ryan Mulle then got Matt Lawman to ground out to strand the tying run at the time 90 feet away.

The Colts continue this quick road trip to Laredo at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 18 before returning home for a brief homestand against Harlingen over the weekend. On Friday, June 20, there will be a Glow-in-the-dark logo baseball giveaway, sponsored by AEP and Suddenlink.
