Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Christian Soucy posted 34 saves and rookie Jiri Jakes completed a beautiful move with the game-winner at 11:28 of the final period in a 3-2 Anchorage victory over Long Beach Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena.
Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities in the first period, but only Long Beach's Tomas Kapusta was able to find the range despite 14 shots on goal for each side. With just over five minutes remaining in the second period, Kimbi Daniels took a pass from Jakes and beat Ice Dogs' netminder Mike Buzak to deadlock the contest 1-1. After working so hard to gain a tie, Anchorage (4-10-1) suffered the inevitable letdown and Long Beach took advantage, as Jamie O'Leary flipped a backhander past Soucy at 17:29 to give his club a 2-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.
The Aces, who came into the game with the league's worst power play (8.5%), had failed on their first six chances before B.J. Young ripped a wrist shot past Buzak 7:39 into the third period for his first goal of the season. Four minutes later, Jakes made the play of the night and perhaps the year to date with a brilliant toe drag past Ice Dogs' defenseman Roger Maxwell before beating Buzak for a 3-2 edge with 8:32 left in regulation. Soucy and the defense (only eight shots allowed in the final frame) made that lead hold up, and Anchorage won its second game when trailing after two periods, matching its victory total from a year ago in that situation.
The Aces will face Long Beach (6-5) in a rematch tomorrow night at Sullivan Arena at 7:00 p.m., looking to move within a point of climbing out of the WCHL cellar. This evening's win marked just the second for Anchorage in its last 12 meetings with the Ice Dogs, and its first at Sullivan since the 2000-01 season. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
