Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (45-43, 16-22) fell behind the defending United League Champion Alexandria Aces (57-32, 30-10) early and could never recover as the Aces won 15-7 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The Aces got on the board in the first almost the exact same way they did in game two yesterday, as Tyrone Pendergrass led off with a double, moved to third on a Richard Paz sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Selwyn Langaigne ground out to but Angel Cordero (1-1) down 1-0.

The WhiteWings tied it up against former WhiteWing Danny Bonilla without the benefit of a hit in the first as Bub Bergstrom led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Miguel Peguero ground out.

Bryan Sabatella put the Aces back on top with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, with two outs in the second.

The Aces chased Cordero in the third as Eddie Fitzpatrick led off with an infield single. Tyrone Pendergrass reached on a fielder's choice and Richard Paz walked. Langaigne hit a two-run double, Josh Tranum hit an RBI-single and Palmer Karr Jr. hit an RBI-double. A Luis Guance single put runners on the corners. After an infield pop-out, the Aces pulled off a double-steal and Evan Cherry hit an RBI-double to chase Cordero and cap the inning with the Aces up 8-1. Bobby Darling recorded the final out on one pitch to escape the threat.

The WhiteWings scored six of their own in the bottom of the fourth as they also sent ten men to the plate. Brian Nichols led off with a solo-home run to right field, his sixth of the season. Alejandro Martinez followed with a single. One batter later, Danilo Reynoso walked and John Beal singled to load the bases. Bergstrom hit a bases-clearing triple. One batter later, Peguero chased Bonilla with a long two-run home run over the right field wall, his seventh of the season, to make it 8-7 Aces and knock out Bonilla. Walt Nolen (4-1) finished the inning without any further damage.

The Aces took one of those runs back in the fifth as Karr led off with a single and scored two batters later on a Cherry sacrifice fly.

They got two more in the sixth when Wilson Burwell led off with a single and scored on a Langaigne double. One batter later Karr chased Darling with an RBI-single to make it 11-7. Todd Lutz got out of the inning without allowing any further runs.

The WhiteWings had a scary moment in the top of the seventh when Fitzpatrick hit a blooper to center field. Jesus Valdez dove forward while John Beal slid to try to make the catch. Neither did as they collided. Valdez remained in the game (though he was pinch-hit for by Julian Williams in the ninth) and Beal left under his own power.

The Aces came alive against Lutz in the eighth, in part thanks to two errors as the Aces sent nine men to the plate and scored four unearned runs to take a 15-7 lead.

The WhiteWings welcome the Edinburg Coyotes to town for five games in four days starting tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Joe Rogers (10-3) is expected to face Bric Steed (7-7).
