Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Idaho Steelheads broke open a 2-2 game late in the second period and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Anchorage Aces in front of 3,672 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
Idaho pounced on Anchorage early, as defenseman Martin Vasut scored his first professional goal on a one-timer just 39 seconds into the game. The Aces squared the contest at 1-1 after rookie Ryan Moren fed Dean Larson with a beautiful pass in the slot at 8:57 of the first period. Joe Rybar gave Idaho a 2-1 edge when he banged in a rebound on the power play less than five minutes later.
Anchorage dominated the first half of the middle frame, finally tying the game on a Larson rebound at 12:16, assisted by Mike Marostega and B.J. Young, who picked up his first point after being signed Friday. The Steelheads needed just 51 seconds to regain the lead on Wes Dorey's rebound effort. Ben Keup knocked home a loose puck in front with only 1:36 left in the period as Idaho took a commanding 4-2 lead into the final 20 minutes.
Cory Morgan's second goal in as many nights less than four minutes into the third period accounted for the final margin as the Steelheads permitted Anchorage only five shots on goal. Larson now leads the WCHL in scoring with ten points on five goals and five assists, but the Aces have lost all four games against Idaho this year and are just 2-15-1 in their last 18 meetings at Sullivan Arena, including playoffs.
Early Saturday, Anchorage elected to waive Sean Rowe, who scored 168 goals in five full seasons for the Aces from 1996-2001. Rookie forward Chris Hills was activated from the injured reserve list and played several shifts against the Steelheads Saturday night.
Anchorage, who has dropped three straight, and Idaho, winners of four in a row, will meet in the series finale tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. ADT. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
