ANCHORAGE, Alaska - San Diego scored twice in the third period to snap a 1-1 tie and deal Alaska its first loss of the 2005-06 season 3-1 before 3,731 Monday at Sullivan Arena.
Playing their first Monday night game since March of 2002, the Aces came out firing in the first period, taking 10 of the game's first 11 shots on goal and seizing a 1-0 lead on Barrett Heisten's second goal of the year at 3:43. But Alaska lost Chris Heisten due to a wrist injury and soon momentum as well, going nearly 20 minutes without a shot on goal, including the first 12 ½ minutes of the second period.
Meanwhile, San Diego rallied, tying the score on a power play goal off the rush by Martin Mandeville with 5:52 left in the first period and out-shooting Alaska 9-5 in the second period. The Gulls owned the better of play throughout much of the third period and grabbed their first lead of the entire series (the Aces had won 2-1 Friday and 4-3 Saturday) with 13:36 remaining when David Svagrovsky whipped a wrist shot by Alaska starter Matt Underhill (25 saves) from the right circle. Doug MacIver, who scored just one goal in 63 games last season while racking up an ECHL-high 326 PIM, scored an insurance goal from the high slot at 13:36. The Aces registered the game's last 10 shots on goal, but failed to solve Tyler Weiman, who finished with 34 saves.
Alaska (2-1) continues its six-game homestand to open the season Friday and Saturday night at 7:15 against Bakersfield. Saturday is Military Night and Share-A-Ride will hand out commemorative Mr. Potato Heads, dressed in Aces attire, of course. Sunday's series finale with the Condors (1-0) at 5:05 p.m. marks the first of five KeyBank "Skate with the Aces" opportunities following the contest. All games, home and away, will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. In addition, all games (excluding road contests at Long Beach and Victoria) will be available on a pay-per-view basis on the internet, courtesy of B2 Networks.
