MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE - Matt Leitner scored just 29 seconds into the overtime period to give the homestanding Manchester Monarchs a 5-4 victory over the Alaska Aces Saturday at the SNHU Arena.
Alaska, after battling back from a two-goal deficit, has now garnered at least a point in their first two games of a ten-game road trip.
Both teams were able to get the puck to the net in the first period, but only Manchester was able to pierce the void. In a 4 on 4 situation, Zac Lynch curled around the Alaska defense and roofed a wrister past Aces goaltender Michael Garteig for his 15th goal of the season and a 1-0 Monarchs lead. A single assist was awarded to Matt Leitner.
Shots after one period: 13-12 Manchester.
Quick start for the Monarchs in the second period. Just 38 seconds in, Tim Bozon popped in his second goal of the season from Ashton Rome and Tyler Elbrecht to give his team a 2-0 lead.
The Aces answered at 17:30 on Ben Lake's jam off a scramble in front of Monarchs netminder Sam Brittain, assisted by Charlie Sampair (who did the heavy-lifting to get the puck to the net) and Tyler Ruegsegger to make it 2-1 Monarchs.
At 19:21, Thomas Schemitsch banged in a rebound of his own shot and Manchester skated off with a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Shots were 30-26 Monarchs.
Alaska roared back in the third period on the back of Tim Coffman. The swift center scored on the power play at 5:58, his 18th goal of the season, with help from Tyler Shattock and Nolan Descoteaux. Then Coffman struck again at 10:53 from Mitch Jones and Mackenze Stewart to make it a 3-3 game.
After Wade Murphy tallied for Manchester at 11:42 to regain the lead, Alaska answered with Tyler Shattuck's blue-ice goal from Steve Tarasuk and Tim Wallace at 17:15 to tie the game again at 4.
Shots after three periods were 45-45.
In the overtime, Leitner found himself alone in front of Garteig, and snapped the puck to the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Joey Diamond.
Garteig finished the game with 41 saves, as did Brittain.
Alaska was 1-2 on the power play, Manchester was 1-3.
The Aces and the Monarchs will meet again Sunday at the SNHU Arena at 11:00am AST.
