Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Alexandria, La. - The rain that held up on Tuesday decided to come on Wednesday. The second game of a three-game series between the Harlingen WhiteWings and the Aces was suspended in the bottom of the ninth inning with two out at Bringhurst Field.
Luis Guance, who prolonged Tuesday's game with a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, nearly did the same on Wednesday. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, he singled home newly acquired Patrick O'Sullivan to tie the game at three apiece.
Before the rain hit, starting pitching had been the story. Aces starter Alexis Sosa pitched a gem working eight innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. The amazing feat was that he struck out 11 WhiteWings.
On the other side, âWings starter Jorge Lugo pitched a nice game of his own pitching 5.1 innings and giving up just one run on six hits and three walks, while striking out seven.
Harlingen took the lead early when in the top of the second Kevin Griffin hit a two-run homer to left to take a 2-0 lead.
The Aces' bats were mostly silent for the first five innings only managing to get two hits. In the bottom of the sixth, Madison Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score O'Sullivan.
The Aces tied the game up in the eighth at two apiece when Guance scored on a Blake Butler single to left.
After a 19 minute rain delay in the top of the ninth, it looked like the WhiteWings would win again despite late-inning heroics by the Aces when a David Cardona RBI-single allowed pinch runner Argelis Nunez to give Harlingen the lead 3-2.
The game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the ninth. When play resumes, Edwards will be batting with Guance on second base with two out. Caleb Balbuena was pitching for the WhiteWings when play was stopped.
The game will resume Thursday at 7:05 before the regularly scheduled series finale. In the second game, Angel Guzman (0-0) for the Aces and Dan Valentin (0-0) for the WhiteWings are scheduled to pitch. It will be LSMC Night with Shirt Off Our Back where fans will have a chance to win the jersey of their favorite Ace. Also, every Thursday is Toyota Tundra and Q93 Thirsty Thursday with Budweiser and Q93 Party on the Patio. There will be a special on 10-ounce cans of beer: two for $3.
