Broncos Shut Down By Amarillo's Pitching

LAREDO, TX-The Laredo Broncos were only able to muster 7 hits on offense as they drop their first game of the season to the Amarillo Dillas 8-2 at Veterans Field in front of a crowd of 2402. The Broncos continue their six game season opening home stand with the rubber game of a three game series with Amarillo on Thursday night at Veterans Field. For more info call (956)-722-BASE (2273).

The Dillas struck first in the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning when first baseman AJ Johnson hit a leadoff a double and then scored on catcher Justin Wenger's single which got by Broncos right fielder Santiago Guerrero allowing Wenger to go to third. He then scored on an rbi groundout by Stephen Douglas.

The Broncos would get those runs back in the 4th inning as with one out Guerrero walked and then went to 2nd on Jose Salas' single. After another walk to Johnny Lopez, third baseman Ivan Reyes smoked a 2 run double the third base line to tie the game at 2.

That is when trouble struck for Laredo's starter Henry Lozado and reliever Julian Williams. The first two men in the inning reached base on singles chasing Lozado from the game. Williams then came in and hit the first man he saw and then gave up back to back rbi singles to AJ Johnson and Justin Wenger. Andrew Wong capped off the inning with a 2 run double to give Amarillo the 7-2 lead.

The Dillas' starting pitcher Taylor Allen held the Broncos to 2 runs and 3 hits in his 5 innings of work. He was relieved by Ralph Roberts who pitched 3 scoreless innings only giving up 3 hits and striking out 3. Amarillo capped off the scoring on the day with a solo home run by Gary Schneidmiller and went on to win the game 8-2.

Henry Lozado picked up the loss for the Broncos going 4+ innings giving up 4 runs 3 of which were earned on 8 hits. Reliver Julian Williams didn't shine as well giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings of work.
