San Angelo Colts News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - After pounding out 13 runs and 14 hits on Opening Day, the San Angelo Colts' bats went dormant on Wednesday as the Colts (1-1) lost for the first time this season, dropping a 5-1 morning game to the Edinburg Coyotes (1-1).
The Colts managed just five hits against four Edinburg pitchers and grounded into three double plays, two of which ended innings. San Angelo sent more than four men to the plate in an inning just once-in the fifth, when they scored their lone run of the game.
Both starting pitchers, left-hander Frank James (0-1) for San Angelo and righty Aaron Guerra (1-0) for Edinburg, held the teams scoreless for the first three innings. But James, who didn't allow a hit in the first three frames, ran into trouble in the fourth as Edinburg put up a four-spot in that inning and chased the southpaw from the contest.
The Coyotes opened the inning with four straight singles, the last of which was a two-run single to left field by Logan Wood. The next batter walked and with the bases loaded and nobody out, James was pulled in favor of Ryan Mulle. Daryl Jones then scored on a wild pitch and Jermaine Williams made it 4-0 with an RBI groundout.
The only San Angelo run of the day came in the fifth against Guerra when Bryan Frichter singled and then scored on a double by Sam McLain, who was 2-for-3. The Coyotes got the run right back in the sixth and took a 5-1 edge when Eric Gonzalez hit a solo shot off Mule, his first homer of the season.
Edinburg relievers Bryan Heaston, Adam Clay, and Julio Castro threw a hitless inning each to seal the victory. Left-handers Justin Robinson and Brandon Kling both made their San Angelo debuts in relief and pitched a scoreless inning each.
The Colts conclude this three-game series in Edinburg with a 7:05 p.m. start on Thursday, May 15. After a weekend series in Alexandria, the Colts return to San Angelo for their home opener at Foster Field on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m., and following the game fans will be treated to a Fireworks Show sponsored by Adobe Signs & T-shirts and KLST.
