Aberdeen takes down Mahoning Valley, 9-2

(ABERDEEN, MD) - The ‘Birds used 11 hits on par to a 9-2 drubbing of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Monday evening at Ripken Stadium.

Richard D'Oleo led the offensive attack with a 3-for-3 performance, two runs scored and two RBI.

Starter Kenny Moreland improved to 4-1 after starting slow. The right-hander from Springfield, Virginia gave up two early runs, but bounced back. Moreland retired six Scrappers by strikeout on his way to his to the victory.

The ‘Birds put together six runs in the fourth and fifth innings as T.J. Baxter and Ty Kelly added a pair of runs in each of those two frames.

The Scrapers jumped ahead early after third baseman Kyle Bellows belted his third home run to left field in the first inning.

Aberdeen tied the game at one after a pair of costly mistakes by Mahoning Valley. Levi Carolus would score after an infield single from D'Oleo.

Tim Palinscar scored for the Scrappers after Lurvin Basabe singled to center field to give Mahoning Valley a 2-1 advantage.

The IronBirds battled back as Steve Bumbry recorded his first professional triple and then added a run to tie the game.

D'Oleo gave the ‘Birds the go-ahead third run after Mike Mooney used a sac-ground out to first. Mooney, in his first professional year from the University of Florida, recorded a pair of sac RBI to help the IronBirds.

Ty Kelly went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Justin Dalles hit 2-for-5 with two RBI.

William & Mary alum Kevin Landry pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in the victory.

Mahoning Valley's Kyle C. Smith fell to 0-2 after conceding three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

The ‘Birds continue game two of the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Nick Haughian (1-2) will face Mahoning Valley's right-hander Clayton Cook (1-1).
