Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
WINDSOR, Colo. -- Let's run a little experiment.
Below, we've listed stat lines from consecutive weeks of Abdel Guadalupe's sizzling start to his second season as an Owl. Can you guess which won him his second career Pioneer League South Division Batter of the Week award?
*10-for-21, 5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 2 BB, .476/500/1.095 ... also hit for the cycle
*8-for-26, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 4 BB, 1 SB, .308/400/769
Fans of trick questions probably guessed the latter. And those people guessed correctly.
Now, this experiment is not an indictment on the league for potentially missing the mark a week ago. Or to imply the powerful Puerto Rican's performance is falling off compared to a week ago.
It's simply to say that the Owlz have one of the best hitters in the league, and he's finally being recognized as such.
Through 24 games, Guadalupe leads the Owlz in at-bats (89), doubles (7), home runs (9), total bases (69), extra-base hits (18) and RBI (28). He leads the entire league in homers, total bases, and XBH. Not to mention he ranks top-three in RBI (T-3rd) and slugging percentage (2nd - .775) too.
He's one of five hitters in the league with two multi-homer games this season, and one of two to hit dual dingers in consecutive games. He did it on June 13 and 14, smack in the middle of this award-winning past week.
The slugger's signature moment was the cycle he hit on June 9, the PBL's only cycle of the season so far. A uni-cycle ... if you will. Guadalupe logged an Owlz season-high five hits that night, submitting just the second cycle since the Owlz moved to Northern Colorado. It became the sixth cycle in Owlz franchise history.
And Guadalupe hasn't slowed much since. He's currently slashing .348/.404/.775. He's already matched his RBI total from last season, and he's done it in 11 fewer games. He's one XBH shy of his '22 total and two stolen bases shy of the five he swiped a year ago too.
Simply put, this fiery free-swinger from Fajardo is en feugo.
He's looking to keep the hot start aflame during his squad's series up in Billings. First pitch for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
