A Night of Firsts in Broncos Overtime Victory

The Swift Current Broncos kickstarted the second half of the 2018-19 campaign against the Moose Jaw Warriors and escaped in overtime on the road, edging the Warriors 4-3.
Broncos forward Carter Chorney recorded his first goal since joining Swift Current in a trade earlier this month 13:35 into the second period. The 17-year-old Chorney entered the zone, deked around the Warriors defender and raised a shot over the shoulder of Brodan Salmond in an outstanding individual effort.
Warriors blue liner Jett Woo tallied his sixth of the year two minutes before the second period expired to tie the tilt up 1-1. Shots favoured Moose Jaw 30-10 through 40 minutes of play with Broncos goaltender Joel Hofer accounting for 29 saves up to that point.
Rookie forward Matthew Culling broke the 1-1 deadlock with a little over five minutes left in the third as the Regina, SK product entered the zone down the right wing on a two-on-two rush. Culling fired a wrist shot from the right faceoff area just over the lower left pad and under the glove hand of Warriors netminder Salmond.
20-year-old defenceman Matt Stanley collected his first goal of the season at the 17:07 mark to give Swift Current a 3-1 lead. Owen Blocker got the puck over to Stanley who was stationed at the point and he released a wrist shot that found its way through traffic.
Moose Jaw pulled Salmond for the extra attacker with under two minutes to play and got a goal from forward Brayden Tracey.
Then the unthinkable occurred as again, the Warriors pulled the goalie and got rewarded as Keenan Taphorn scored from the slot area 22 seconds later to tie the game up 3-3.
Swift Current made up for it in overtime when they executed a two-on-one play to perfection. Alex Moar made a cross ice pass to Culling and he patiently waited with the puck before returning a pass back to Moar who then calmly tucked it home to give the Broncos a 4-3 victory. The goal from Moar marked his first in the Western Hockey League.
Shots on goal were 42-21 in favour of Moose Jaw. The Broncos did not see any power play time but their penalty kill units were terrific, successfully holding the Warriors scoreless on four power play chances.
The Broncos and Warriors are right back at it on Friday night at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex for the back end of the home-and-home set. Friday night marks the annual Crescent Point Minor Hockey night as kids will be able to enter the game for free if they don a hockey jersey. Puck drop is at 7:05pm CT.
