A look ahead: Crew carries road warrior mentality into difficult May
Published on May 1, 2014 under Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
Following a two-match homestand, the Crew hits the road once again this week for a Sunday fixture at Sporting Kansas City before a midweek clash visiting the Houston Dynamo next Wednesday. The road trip marks the start of a difficult May schedule and features four of the Black & Gold's next six matches away from home.
The Black & Gold have been successful as guests thus far in 2014, notching wins at D.C. United and Seattle Sounders FC and a draw against the Earthquakes in San Jose. The mentality for Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter and his players has been to play the same, no matter what stadium the match is played in.
With a 2-0-1 record with six goals scored and only two allowed on the road this season, the Crew can carry a bit of confidence into the upcoming road matches. While three of the four upcoming opponents' venues have seen less than four years of MLS play, the Black & Gold have seen some form of success at each stadium.
Venue Record GF GA
Sporting Park 1-3-0 5 9
BBVA Compass Stadium 0-1-1 3 5
Providence Park 0-1-1 0 1
BMO Field 3-1-5 10 8
OVERALL 4-6-7 18 23
Though the Crew is coming off consecutive losses last season at Sporting Park in Kansas City, the Black & Gold did notch a stunning 2-1 victory in front of the KC Cauldron in 2012 behind Jairo Arrieta's first two goals for the club. Arrieta also scored in a 3-2 defeat at Sporting Park last July.
In just two trips to both the Houston Dynamo's BBVA Compass Stadium and Portland Timbers FC's Providence Park, the Black & Gold have picked up a draw and a loss at each venue. The team's first trip to BBVA Compass Stadium was also Federico Higuan's first match as a member of the Crew. The Argentine made a memorable MLS debut, assisting on Eddie Gaven's tally just 12 minutes after coming on as a halftime substitute.
Perhaps Toronto FC's BMO Field is the most friendly of the Crew's enemy stadia. In nine trips to Toronto, the Black & Gold have picked up a result in eight of them. With two goals in two matches at BMO Field last season, Dominic Oduro leads all active Crew players with three career goals at the Reds' home.
The Crew's May expeditions begin on Sunday at Sporting Park in Kansas City (4:00 p.m. ET / NBCSN).
