A Big Deal for Bowers Out of Ottawa, Claimed by Colorado

Waterloo, Iowa- Only weeks into his college hockey career and still far from his National Hockey League debut, former Waterloo Black Hawks forward Shane Bowers has already been part of a blockbuster pro hockey trade.
The Colorado Avalanche received the right to sign Bowers from the Ottawa Senators, amidst a series of swaps involving three teams. Colorado moved center Matt Duchesne to Ottawa, and the Senators shipped forward Kyle Turris to the Nashville Predators. Besides Bowers, Colorado received a healthy contingent of prospects and draft picks from both clubs.
In June, Ottawa had used their first round pick to claim Bowers, 28th overall. With the selection, he became the third Waterloo Black Hawk to ever be selected during the first round of an NHL Draft.
Currently a freshman at Boston University, Bowers is tied for second with four goals through ten games for the Terriers. His six points rank fifth on the squad.
During two seasons with the Black Hawks, the Halifax, Nova Scotia, native recorded 37 goals and 47 assists in 116 regular season games. Bowers' 2016/17 campaign included a ten-game point streak in January and February, as well as five game-winning goals throughout the year.
No former Waterloo player has appeared for the Avalanche during a regular season NHL game. Colorado's only tie with the Hawks through the draft came in 1997 with the selection of Doug Schmidt during the 8th round.
