\'Riders Groundskeeper honored with 2006 Texas League Sport Turf Crew of the Year

September 5, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release

FRISCO, TX (September, 5 2006) -- It's not a strange sight to arrive at Dr Pepper Ballpark in the early morning hours and see a figure riding a lawn mower across the grass playing surface of the field. Nor is it strange to see that same figure carefully manicuring edges of the warning track just after lunch. That same figure can be seen grooming the infield as dusk arrives. The figure is Billy Ball, Head Groundskeeper for the Frisco RoughRiders.

For Ball, grounds keeping is a labor of love. And his love is noticed. That's because Ball and his crew have been awarded the 2006 Texas League Sport Turf Crew of the Year.

"We couldn't be more proud of Billy and his team of groundskeepers," said RoughRiders President/GM Scott Sonju. "Not everyone sees the hard work that Billy puts in and the dedication that he has to making our playing surface the best in Minor League Baseball."

Ball joined the RoughRiders prior to the 2005 season. He previously worked on the design and care of a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in North Carolina. Ball has been a Groundskeeper in the NFL and MLB, working on surfaces for Super Bowls, the World Series and spring training facilities.
