Hickory Crawdads News Release
After waiting out a rain delay of one hour and forty-six minutes, and watching the Delmarva Shorebirds tally three early runs, the Hickory Crawdads tallied four in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh Saturday night. Hickory's 7-3 come-from-behind victory marked a season high sixth straight win. It was the first of those six wins at home as 2,939 fans watched at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the second inning against Hickory starter Jared Hughes. Making his first start in the South Atlantic League, Hughes allowed a leadoff double to 3B Ryan Finan and then uncorked two wild pitches to allow Delmarva the early 1-0 lead. After a one out walk to LF Quincy Ascencion, and a steal of second base, Ascencion moved to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.
Delmarva made it 3-0 in the third inning. Shorebird DH Zach Dillon led off the inning with a walk. With one out, 1B Vito Chiaravalloti doubled Dillon home.
After Delmarva started Brandon Erbe struck out seven of the first nine he faced and allowed just one hit in the first three innings, the Crawdads rallied in the fourth with one out. After a leadoff ground out, CF Andrew McCutchen drew a walk. He scored on DH Mike McCuision's RBI double. The âDads got within 3-2 on RF Brad Corley's run scoring single. Hickory LF Jason Delaney followed with a two run homer to left that gave the âDads a 4-3 lead.
Hughes (1-0) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings to earn the win. Erbe (5-7) struck out nine but took the loss allowing four runs on four hits.
The Crawdad bullpen pitched four scoreless hitless innings. Dave Davidson went two innings and struck out five without allowing a base runner. Matt Bishop worked two frames and allowed just one hit.
The âDads tallied three times in the seventh inning. With one out Hickory 3B Eddie Prasch singled and stole second. He scored on 2B Cameron Blair's double to make it 5-3. An error allowed 2B Shelby Ford to reach and Blair to score. Ford came home on McCuision's RBI single making it 7-3.
The âDads struck out a season high 15 times in the game. Delmarva batters went down on strikes nine times. McCuision had three hits in the game for Hickory. Delmarva was limited to three hits in the game and none after the fourth inning.
The two teams play at 6pm Sunday night. Crawdad right hander Todd Redmond meets Delmarva righty David Hernandez.
