Catfish Lose Lead, Game Late

Columbus, GA - Despite a Columbus Catfish (12-11) franchise record 4,838 in attendance for Military Appreciation Night, the club fell short in an 8-5 loss to the Augusta GreenJackets (18-5) Saturday at Golden Park. Columbus held a 4-3 lead entering the eighth inning but Augusta posted two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to run away with it.

Augusta took a quick lead with three runs in the top of the first inning but Columbus tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second. LF Lucas May drove in 2B Travis Denker with a single. SS Ivan DeJesus later singled home DH David Sutherland and May. The Catfish took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning when DeJesus plated another run with a single.

In the eighth and ninth innings the GreenJackets scored a total of five runs to take an 8-4 lead. Columbus did not give up without a fight. In the bottom of the ninth they loaded the bases and scored a run on a walk to RF Sergio Pedroza. 3B Russ Mitchell came to bat representing the potential winning run but lined out to right field, ending the game.

Catfish starter RHP Mario Alvarez gave up three runs in the first frame but settled in for a total of six innings. RHP Arismendy Castillo suffered the loss after allowing two runs in one inning of work. RHP Osiris Matos picked up the win for Augusta with 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
