Mississippi Braves News Release

Montgomery, AL - Following a rain out Saturday night, the M-Braves and Biscuits split a doubleheader with Montgomery winning 8-0 in the first game and Mississippi answering with a 7-3 win in the second.

In game 1, the Biscuits shut out the Braves behind 6 strong innings of work from starter Alex Torres, who got the win. The Biscuits gave Torres plenty of support when they scored 7 runs in the 5th inning and sent 11 batters to the plate.

In the inning, Emeel Salem, Chris Nowak, Nevin Ashley, Greg Sexton, Cody Cipriano, Cody Strait and John Matulia all scored. The biggest hit of the inning was a 2-RBI double by Nevin Ashley. The Braves had no answer and fell 8-0 in the first game.

Torres moved to (2-1) with the win, while Braves starter Mike Minor took the loss, (0-2).

In game 2, the M-Braves wasted no time scoring their first run. Eric Duncan's 2-out single set up Mauro Gomez's at-bat, who doubled in Duncan to make the score 1-0. This remained the score until the bottom of the 3rd inning, which is when Montgomery earned their only lead of the game.

Emeel Salem and Chris De La Cruz both scored in the 3rd: Salem on a wild pitch and De La Cruz on the RBI fielders choice by Matt Fields. The 2-1 lead would be short-lived for the Biscuits.

In the 4th, Mississippi had their first multiple home run inning of the season. Mauro Gomez crushed a two-run homer to regain the lead at 3-2. Two batters later, Cody Johnson belted his 2nd home run of the season to make the score 4-2 in favor of the M-Braves.

Mississippi had another three-run inning in their next at-bat, sending 8 men to the plate. Alex Romero, Willie Cabrera and Randy Gress all scored. An Eric Duncan 2-RBI single made the score 6-2 and a Cody Johnson single gave the Braves a 7-2 lead. Johnson finished the game 3-4 with 2 RBI's and a run scored, his best game of the season.

In the 7th, the Biscuits managed to bring in 1 run on an Emeel Salem single to drive in Drew Anderson, but that's as close as the Biscuits would get. Brandon Beachy struck out Chris Nowak to end the game and the two teams split the double header.

Game 3 is tomorrow night at 7:05. The Braves will throw RHP Kyle Cofield (1-0; 4.76) and the Biscuits will use LHP Darin Downs (1-0; 2.38).
