Whalers acquire Kyle Lawson in trade with Saginaw

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - Plymouth Whalers' President, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vellucci has announced the acquisition of 18-year-old defenseman Kyle Lawson from the Saginaw Spirit in exchange for 19-year-old goaltender Ian Keserich.

Lawson played last season for the National Team Developmental Program in Ann Arbor, scoring 3 goals with 15 assists for 18 points in 31 games last season for the NTDP Under-18 Program. Lawson also played for the gold-medal Team USA in the World Under-18 Championships last spring, scoring a goal and an assist in six games in the tournament.

Lawson - 5-feet-11 and 200 pounds from New Hudson, MI - was originally drafted by the Owen Sound Attack in the 9th round (168th overall) in the 2003 OHL Draft. Lawson never played for Owen Sound and his rights where acquired by Saginaw last season.

Keserich - originally drafted by Sudbury Wolves in the 7th round (127th overall) in the 2002 OHL Draft - was acquired by the Whalers for a draft choice. Keserich has never played for the Whalers, playing instead for Ohio State of the CCHA, posting a 2.42 goals against average in 6 games last year for the Buckeyes.
