Carolina tops Lookouts, 4-1

Zebulon, NC --- Nic Ungs worked six innings to lead Carolina to a 4-1, sweep-avoiding win over the Chattanooga Lookouts before 5,137 at Five County Stadium.

Ungs (W, 3-1, 6ip, 5h, 1r, 1er, 3w, 4k) allowed his only run without a hit in the Lookouts second inning. By then, though, Carolina (22-20) held a 2-0 lead. Jason Stokes (1-4, rbi, 2k) singled home Josh Wilson (1-4, r), then Chip Ambres (2-3, 2r, w) scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Demarco (1-2, r, rbi, sf, w)./

Former Mudcat Luke Hudson (L, 1-4) suffered his fourth straight start, lasting one batter into the fourth inning on 79 pitches. Hudson, who is recovering from shoulder surgery which sidelined him all of 2003, permitted four walks and four hits in three-plus ininngs. Five of the last six batters to face Hudson worked 3-2 counts against him.

Carolina pushed the lead to 3-1 in the third inning when Ambres scored after a single by Magness. Ambres, running from first base, went to third on the hit, then scored when the relay throw toward home plate deflected off of first baseman Jesse Gutierrez's glove.

In the sixth, a wild pitch by reliever Casey DeHart scored Demarco from third with two outs and the bases loaded.

Jerrod Fuell (ND, 2ip, 0h, 0r, 0w, 1k) pitched two perfect innings with Randy Messenger (S, 1, 1ip, 0h, 0r, 0w, 2k) recording his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Carolina's homestand continues Saturday night against the Tennessee Smokies with Bill Murphy (4-1, 3.18) starting at 7:15 PM ET against the Smokies' Luis Martinez (3-3, 5.36).
