Knoxville Smokies News Release
Zebulon, NC. - The Tennessee offense failed to take advantage of 11 Carolina walks and dropped the first game of a four game series 3-0 Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
The Smokies (22-21) were issued 11 walks - including 8 from starter Bill Murphy (5-1) - but only managed 3 hits in their second straight loss.
In the fourth, Billy Hall reached base on a Gabe Johnson two-base error. He scored from second on a bloop double down the right field line from Josh Wilson. Wilson's double was one of two hits allowed by tough luck loser Luis Martinez (3-4).
Carolina extended its lead against Matt Parker in the eighth. Wilson delivered his second double of the game and scored on Jason Stokes' league leading 12th homer.
Randy Messenger (2) picked up his second save in as many days, and notched consecutive saves for the first time in his career.
The second game of the series is Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Chris Narveson (0-5, 4.54) will start for the Smokies against Ronald Bellizario (1-3, 5.59).
