
Slugging Braves Top Barons with 15 Hits

Greenville, SC-The Greenville Braves ended their two game losing skid Saturday night by beating the Birmingham Barons 6-2 at Municipal Stadium. Zach Miner relieved Brian Moehler and pitched five innings, allowing two hits, no runs, two walks and six strikeouts to be named Player of the Game. Adam Stern had a sensational evening also by going 4-5 with three singles and a triple, while scoring two runs and adding a stolen base.
The Barons started the game by loading up the bases with three consecutive singles by Normand Martel, Ruddy Yan and Nate Murphy off of Brian Moehler (No Decision ). Carlos Maldonado drove in their first run on a sacrifice groundout. They stranded three runners that inning.
The G-Braves answered the Barons run with one of their own as Stern singled off of Ryan Meaux (Loss 2-5) and Brent Butler reached second base as the center and left field ran into each other. Nate Murphy, the center fielder, had the error. With runners at first and third, Bill McCarthy grounded out to the third baseman driving in the G-Braves first run.
After a short top of the second by the Barons, the G-Braves added another run at the bottom of the second with a leadoff double by Kelly Johnson who eventually was driven in by Brayan Pena.
Each team collected a run during the third inning as Ruddy Yan for the Barons singled off of Moehler then stole two bases. He was driven in by Aaron McNeil's single. In the bottom of the second, the G-Braves got their run by a leadoff single by Adam Stern off of Meaux. Bill McCarthy drove him in with a single to center field. After three innings of play, the score was Greenville 3 and Birmingham 2.
To add comfort to their lead, the Braves added two more runs off of Meaux. A leadoff walk to Tony Pena Jr. started the inning. Cory Aldridge doubled to right center field which scored Pena on the play. Aldridge advanced to third off of a groundout by Brayan Pena and one out later Napoleon Calzado tripled to score Aldridge and give the G-Braves a 5-2 lead after five innings of play.
After two scoreless innings, the G-Braves add another run from Andy Marte's homerun blast off of Alan Wyett. The G-Braves expanded their lead to four after the homerun 6-2.
Zach Miner (Win; 2-4) clinched the win after outstanding pitching to close out the game against the Barons.
Game Notes On Sunday, the Greenville Braves host the Birmingham Barons for game two of their four game series held at Municipal Stadium with a 2:15 p.m. start time...The probably pitchers are Arnie Munoz (6-0; 1.51) for Birmingham and Matt Merricks (1-3; 4.41) for the G-Braves...Sunday at Municipal Stadium is Carolina's Youth Reading Program Night sponsored by Davis Inc., Carolina Pride Hot Dogs, Gatti-town, The Greenville County Library System and Home Depot along with Family Fest which is sponsored by Peter Pan and Bi-Lo.(1 Peter Pan label and 1 Bi-Lo receipt good for 1 general admission ticket.)
