Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - 83 Year Old Jim Eriotes set a record by becoming the oldest person to ever bat in a professional baseball game as the Sioux Falls Canaries (3-4) took a 5-3 win against the St. Joe Blacksnakes (5-3) on Tuesday night.

Eriotes came to the plate to lead off the bottom of the first inning. He struck out swinging, but not before making contact and fouling a pitch off. After Eriotes struck out Ralph Santana singled and stole his 24th base of the season. Chad Hermansen followed with a two-run homer giving the Canaries an early 2-0 lead.

The Blacksnakes got one back in the second when Cody Nowlin homered for the third time this season, bringing the score to 2-1 Canaries.

In the bottom of the second, Chris Weber drew a walk and scored on a single by John Schmitz, increasing the Canaries lead to 3-1.

Hermansen doubled in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hall to give the Canaries a 4-1 lead.

Hermansen brought the Canaries lead to 5-1 in the fifth when he belted his second homer of the night and 11th of the season.

The Blacksnakes slithered back into the game with two late runs, but it wasn't enough as the Canaries held on for the 5-3 win.

Aaron Garrison (4-3) picked up the win allowing two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of work and Jesen Merle (3-2) suffered the loss.

The Canaries will host the St. Joe Blacksnakes again tomorrow at noon for the second game of their three-game series at the Birdcage. South Dakota Tobacco Free Kids Network will present a mini-bat to the first 500 kids 12 and under.
