Hickory Crawdads News Release
Greensboro, NC - The Hickory Crawdads offense woke up just in time to salvage the final game of their series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, as the 'Dads erupted for seven runs in the 6th en route to a come-from-behind 10-4 victory over the 'Hoppers Monday night at NewBridge Bank Park.
The 'Dads bats had been held to eight total runs while dropping their first three games in Greensboro, but the lineup came alive for seven runs on seven hits in the 6th to erase a three-run deficit and come away with a much needed win over the first place Grasshoppers. The Crawdads sent 10 batters to the plate in the decisive frame, with Joe Jackson providing the pivotal blow with a 3-RBI triple to put Hickory ahead.
Prior to the offensive revival, the Grasshoppers looked to be in control as they jumped out to a 1st inning lead for the third time in the series. For the second time in four games it was Greensboro second baseman Brian Anderson who came through with the early go-ahead hit, as the 2014 draft pick lined a 2-out, 2-RBI double off of Hickory starter David Ledbetter for an early 2-0 score. The 'Hoppers advantage grew to 3-0 with another two out hit in the 2nd, this time with JT Riddle delivering a RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
Ledbetter settled down after his rocky start, with the right-hander retiring nine-consecutive batters through the 5th to keep the Crawdads in the game. The 'Dads finally broke through against the Greensboro bullpen in the big 6th inning, as 'Hoppers sidearm right-hander CJ Robinson recorded only two outs while giving up all seven Hickory runs.
The first five Crawdads reached safely to begin the frame, as Janluis Castro singled, Michael De Leon walked, Evan Van Hoosier and Nomar Mazara each recorded RBI singles, and Kellin Deglan picked up a base knock to load the bases with the 'Dads down 3-2. Following a strikeout from Jairo Beras for the first out of the inning, Jackson lined a bases clearing, 3-RBI triple into the left-center field gap and also came around to score as well on a throwing error to third to put Hickory ahead 6-3. The Crawdads picked up one final tally in the inning when Castro delivered his second hit of the frame, a RBI double to right to score Ronald Guzman for a 7-3 advantage.
The 'Dads added another run to the lead with a RBI single from Deglan in the 7th, while Greensboro scored their final run on a RBI single by Munoz in the 8th. Hickory finished the scoring in the top of the 9th, when Beras crushed an opposite field, 2-run home run to right for the final 10-4 score.
Six total Crawdads had a multi-hit game, led by Jackson who went 2-5 with a triple, 3 RBIs, and a run scored. Castro put together a perfect night at the plate going 3-3 with a double, RBI, run scored and walk, while Beras finished with a 2-5 evening including his fifth home run of the year, a double, and two RBIs.
Ledbetter (4-4) earned the win for his resilient performance, as the righty allowed three runs on six hits, no walks, and three strikeouts over five innings pitched. Robinson (5-2) took the loss with seven runs allowed on six hits, one walk, and two strikeouts while recording only two outs.
The Crawdads (17-15) pull to within four games of the Grasshoppers (21-11) in the South Atlantic League Northern Division with the win. The 'Dads have an off-day on Tuesday before beginning a seven game home stand Wednesday night, with first pitch against the West Virginia Power scheduled for 7:00 pm.
