Augusta GreenJackets News Release
AUGUSTA, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets announced today that Bill Heaton will be this year's second inductee into the GreenJackets Hall of Fame. Heatons' induction will place him amongst previous inductees Stan Swann, Tim Wakefield and Pablo Sandoval.
In 1988, former US Army Lieutenant Colonel, Bill Heaton, became a major component of bringing baseball back to Augusta when he formed a partnership with the South Atlantic League and secured a franchise to play at Heaton Stadium in Augusta. The team was nicknamed the Augusta Pirates as Heaton was also able to broker an agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates to provide players and coaches to the minor league baseball team. Even though Heaton sold the team a few years after acquiring them, there would be no team or baseball in the city of Augusta without his hard work and dedication.
"The GreenJackets are excited to honor a figure that was instrumental in bringing baseball back to the CSRA in the '80's," said GreenJackets General Manager, Tom Denlinger. "Mr. Heaton helped pave the way for families throughout the area to be able to come and enjoy America's past time in Augusta."
Heatons' induction will be on Friday, July 25 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. There will be a pre-game ceremony on the field where Heaton will receive a plaque honoring him for his dedication to the GreenJackets organization. The plaque will then be displayed prominently on the main concourse.
Game time is slated for 7 PM on July 25th as the GreenJackets face the Savannah Sand Gnats. Gates open at 6:00 PM. The first 1,000 fans will receive Vehicle Sun Visors courtesy of SRP Federal Credit Union. There will also be Launch-A-Ball and post-game kids run the bases.
2014 marks the 26th consecutive season of professional baseball in Augusta. All GreenJackets Ticket Plans, including Full, Half, Weekend, and Custom Plans are on sale now for the 2014 Season.
