Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds had plenty of scoring chances in the series finale, but they fell short 3-1 to the Hagerstown Suns. Delmarva (54-47, 16-16) had runners in scoring position often, but nearly every opportunity went wasted.
Hagerstown took advantage of their only true scoring opportunity of the game. With one out in the third, Steven Brault hit Brennan Middleton with a slider. The next batter, Rafael Bautista slapped a single into right field. Wilmer Difo punched a two-run double down the first base line to open the scoring. Isaac Ballou followed with an RBI double of his own.
Meanwhile, Delmarva could not convert their multitude of chances. The Shorebirds had at least one runner in scoring position in each of the first seven innings. In the second, Hart and Kemp opened the frame with singles and came up empty. In the fourth, Delmarva squandered a bases-loaded situation with one out.
The Shorebirds' only run came in the fifth inning. Jeff Kemp led off the inning with a double, eventually finishing the night with a 3-for-5 with two doubles. Kemp scored from third base when starter Hector Silvestre committed a balk.
Silvestre earned the win with just one run allowed despite giving up nine hits in six innings. Delmarva ended the night having gone 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Steven Brault fell to 7-7 on the year with his fifth straight losing decision despite a quality start.
The Shorebirds will have a travel day on Tuesday before returning to action in Rome on Wednesday. Nick Cunningham (1-2, 6.60) starts for Delmarva in the series opener against Braves' left Matt Marksberry (2-6, 4.18). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm at State Mutual Stadium.
