Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Ottawa, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors will head into game six on Saturday facing elimination after losing 6-3, tonight at the hands of the Ottawa 67's at the Urbandale Centre. As a result Ottawa now leads the series 3-2.
After back-to-back games in Mississauga that produced low scoring, tonight was a different story. The teams exchanged five of the nine goals scored in the first period. The Majors held the lead on three different occasions before Ottawa tied it in the second and pulled away in the third. Mississauga received a scare seconds into the game as Brett Flemming took a shot off the leg and slowly left the ice. The veteran defenceman returned for his next shift.
Devante Smith-Pelly opened the scoring for the Majors at 3:38 of the first after beating Petr Mrazek with a shot wired top corner. Mississauga continued to dominate the play for the early part of the period. Ottawa however got back into the game and tied it up at 7:32 on the power play courtesy of Ryan Martindale. Martindale's wrist shot beat JP Anderson after the Majors failed to clear the puck. The see-saw battle continued as the Majors regained the lead just under two minutes after a goal from Gregg Sutch. Ottawa responded at 14:43 from Corey Cowick. Cowick went to the net and jammed it past Anderson to make it 2-2. Seconds later the Majors took the lead for the third time after Kelly Geoffrey scored his first of the post season. The Majors took the lead into the first intermission.
The Majors began the second period on the power play but could not capitalize on the opportunity. The time expired and Tyler Toffoli went on a clear break away but was stopped by Anderson. The Majors failed later on the power play and Ottawa went onto a five-on-three. A penalty was called on Dalton Smith, dropping it to a four-on-three for Ottawa but it was killed off by Mississauga. At 16:58 of the second the 67's drew even. Corey Cowick drove behind the Majors goal and sent a pass to Andrew Merrett. Merrett's shot was saved and Anthony Nigro put away the rebound to make it 3-3 after forty minutes.
The three players responsible for tying the game for Ottawa were also responsible for the game winning goal. Just over four minutes into the third Corey Cowick scored his second of the game to put Ottawa ahead 4-3. Three minutes later Cody Lindsay took advantage of a poor change by the Majors to wire a shot past Anderson to increase the lead to 5-3. Three minutes later Ottawa doubled their lead after Tyler Cuma picked off a Tim Billingsley pass and sent it cross ice to Thomas Nesbitt. Nesbitt tapped it in to make it 6-3 and that's how it would end. Petr Mrazek made 37 saves and earned the victory for Ottawa. JP Anderson stopped 37 of the 43 shots he faced in a losing effort.
Game six is set for Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Mississauga. To purchase tickets or for more information contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
Notes: The Majors power play unit finished the game 0/3 and have failed to score a power play goal in 17 opportunities this series. The playoff total now sits at 3/39. Corey Cowick and Anthony Nigro collected three points each for Ottawa.
