67's Drop Tight 3-2 Game to Oshawa Generals But Welcome Biggest Crowd of the Year to the Rink

OTTAWA - An impressive effort in front of the largest crowd of the year at The Arena at TD Place fell just short Saturday afternoon as the Ottawa 67's dropped a 3-2 decision to the Oshawa Generals.

The Generals were forced to come from behind in this one after Ottawa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period. Oshawa goalie Aidan Hughes made 37 saves as the 67's came at him from every direction for much of the night.

Mikey DiPietro picked up the loss in goal for Ottawa as the netminder turned away 15 Oshawa shots.

The crowd of 5,936 was the largest of the year for the 67's in a game that was also broadcast on Sportsnet.

After an entertaining opening period ended scoreless despite a handful of good chances by the 67's, the home team broke through in the second.

First it was Lucas Chiodo getting Ottawa on the board with an impressive wrap-around effort that saw the overage forward tuck the puck in low and tight to the near post. That was followed by an impressive sequence that ended with Noel Hoefenmayer putting a nice pass on the tape of Graeme Clarke, who fired it home.

The Generals got goals from Cole Resnick and Tyler Tullio in the second period, while Allan McShane scored the winner in the third.

The 67's return to action on Sunday afternoon when the visit the Generals for the return leg of this home-and-home series.

Icing one of the best teams in franchise history, the 67's will begin their quest for an OHL title and Memorial Cup on March 22 at 7 p.m. at The Arena at TD Place. The rest of the Round 1 schedule will be announced soon.

"We played well enough for half of the game. When we took the lead 2-0, our game management wasn't as good. They're a very good team and showed a lot of resilience in the second half of the season and proved it again today. We had our chances but we need to grind a bit more."

Game Notes

In addition to an assist, 67's defenceman Noel Hoefenmayer led his team with five shots on goal.

Neither team could take advantage of the powerplay in this one, with both sides going 0-for-3.

The 67's continue to lead the West's London Knights by two points in the overall OHL standings, with London playing later Saturday.

Having already locked up the Eastern Conference, the 67's have a 12-point lead over second-place Niagara.

All but three Ottawa players had at least one shot on goal in this game.
